Synopsis and Organizers

Strongly nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) arise in the calculus of variations e.g.in continuum mechanics, where a conforming discretisation gives rise to a computation of approximate minimizers. But for non-variational strongly nonlinear PDEs, possibly in non-divergence form, the discretization is less straight forward. The mathematical understanding of computation of two classes of variational and non-variational nonlinear PDEs are at very different stage of development. The aim of the workshop proposed is to bring together experts from the computational calculus of variations with the few pioneers in the numerical approximation of non-variational nonlinear PDEs.
