Recent Breakthrough on Zimmer's Conjecture and Group Actions 2018, March 31-April 2, 2018

This workshop focusses on the recent breakthrough by Brown, Fischer and Hurtado on Zimmer's Conjecture. The conjecture concerns low dimensional actions of lattices in higher rank Lie groups. The recent breakthrough involves many novel ideas and contributions from various areas of mathematics. The main sources of techniques and ideas are:
(1) rigidity theory,
(2) smooth dynamics, particularly hyperbolic dynamics,
(3) homogeneous dynamics, particularly the study of invariant measures,
(4) operator algebras, particularly Lafforgue's strong property (T).

There will be a 6-hour minicourse as well as discussion sessions on the Zimmer's Conjecture.

*This is not an international workshop. The target participants are mathematics researchers in China.
